About RefDrill

RefDrill times you on one skill for the FE exam: knowing which of the handbook's 21 sections holds a topic before you start scrolling.

Why drill locations

The handbook is the only reference allowed in the exam, and candidates still lose minutes to it, usually because the first guess about where an equation lives was wrong. So the 581 timed prompts here ask where something is across 224 subsections, never how to solve it. The sections and the discipline maps give the same structure as a readable index.

What the data is

Section and subsection names are the handbook's own headings. Page numbers were read directly out of the NCEES FE Reference Handbook 10.5 (seventh printing, April 2025) PDF and cross-checked against its Contents page, and every page number shown comes from that one per-version data file.

Page numbers here are read from handbook version 10.5 (seventh printing, April 2025), which runs to 502 pages. NCEES revises the handbook and page numbers move with it, which is why the drill asks which section a topic lives in rather than which page. Check the version of your own copy, downloaded free from NCEES.

Bylines and dates

The 6 navigation guides carry the site name and no person's byline. In each guide's structured data, the author is the RefDrill organization. If a guide and a section page disagree about where a topic sits, follow the section page. Dates on guides track the latest change to their text.

Who keeps it

A single independent developer, who also runs EngiRef, CalcRef, PhysRef and ReadTheSet. Each covers its own subject; none of them speaks for NCEES.

What this site is not

Not affiliated with or endorsed by NCEES. FE and NCEES are referred to only to name the exam and the publisher of the handbook. The FE Reference Handbook is the copyrighted work of NCEES and is downloaded free from NCEES; no part of it is reproduced here.

  • Not the handbook. Get your own free copy from NCEES and drill against it.
  • Not a question bank. No FE practice problems and no past exam items.
  • Not an engineering course. Finding a topic faster does not help if you do not yet know what you are looking for.
  • Not a promise about your pages. Page data matches version 10.5 (seventh printing, April 2025) only, which is why the drill trains names first.
  • Not a licensing authority. Eligibility, scheduling, scoring and what you may bring are for NCEES and your state board.
